About Shorty Tang

Our Story

Chef "Shorty" Tang came to New York City from Taiwan with his family in 1964 and opened up Hwa Yuan Sichuan Inn in Chinatown shortly thereafter in 1968. Since our family's flagship opened almost fifty years ago, we have continued Shorty Tang's legacy though three generations by delivering the most authentic Chinese homestyle cooking in New York at several family-owned restaurants. With Shorty Tang's Noodles, we are resurrecting that culinary legacy.

As culinary critics and reporters from Arthur Shwarz and Mimi Sheraton to Sam Sifton and publications from Gourmet Magazine to the New York Times and The Village Voice have written, local lore has it that Shorty Tang was the first to bring the sesame cold noodle to the American shores. The Tang family wishes to continue the passion that our grandfather had for Chinese food and to share it with New York City for generations to come.
